Death of Kahnawake Grand Chief Joe Norton: Châteauguay saddened by the departure of a great leader

Saturday, 15 August, 2020

It is with great sadness that the Châteauguay community learned yesterday of the death of Kanhawake Grand Chief Joe Norton.

All those who had the honour of associating with this man affirm that he embodied a striking, unifying and larger-than-life personality. He will live on in our memories and in the history books.

“We are especially saddened because we had begun a process of rapprochement with the Grand Chief and the population of Kahnawake. There was great mutual respect between us and I dare to hope that we can continue our exchanges and the development of our relations, in mutual respect between our communities,” adds the Mayor of Châteauguay, Pierre-Paul Routhier.

Along with the City Councillors, on behalf of all citizens of Châteauguay, he offers his deepest sympathy to Mr. Norton's family and loved ones and to the citizens of Kahnawake.

To commemorate Joe Norton's memory, Ville de Châteauguay will keep its flags at half mast for one week. Its flags had already been lowered on August 6 following the incidents that occurred in Lebanon.
