The Ville de Châteauguay Abolishes Overdue Fees at the Bibliothèque Raymond-Laberge

Published on 17 February 2022

Châteauguay, February 15, 2022 – As part of the 2022 budget adoption process, the municipal council of the Ville de Châteauguay has decided to abolish overdue fees at the Bibliothèque Raymond-Laberge. This measure came into effect on January 1, 2022. Châteauguay is following the example of 475 other public libraries in Quebec who, in recent years, have joined the international Fine-Free Library movement, which began in the United States.

Culture and Knowledge for Everyone

Because overdue fees limit people’s use of the library, the Ville de Châteauguay has taken concrete action through this initiative so that all citizens, particularly users in more vulnerable situations, can fully enjoy universal access to culture, knowledge and education.

However, users are asked to return their documents on the scheduled due date so that other users can also benefit from the documents. Fees for lost or damaged documents are still in effect.

The elimination of overdue fees is supported by the Association des bibliothèques publiques du Québec (Quebec Public Library Association).
