Commercial vehicles and tow trucks – Storage and parking

Commercial truck

The parking and storing of commercial vehicles and trailers are subject to certain rules across the entire territory.

Applicable standards

AUTHORIZED TYPES OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLES AND TRAILERS
  • Commercial vehicles or trailers with up to six wheels and no more than two axles
  • Commercial vehicles or trailers less than 7.5 m (24 ft. 6 in.) long
  • Buses intended for school transit or adapted transit
AUTHORIZED NUMBER
  • A single commercial vehicle and a single trailer are authorized per property.
  • A trailer carrying a watercraft is not counted in the number of authorized trailers.
LOCATION
  • A commercial vehicle or trailer can be parked in the front, side or back yard.
  • In the front yard, the commercial vehicle or trailer must be parking on a paved space.
MINIMUM DISTANCE
  • With the exception of properties where the main building is located less than 6 m (19 ft. 6 in.) from the road right-of-way, in the front yard, the commercial vehicle or trailer, including the attachment device, must be at a minimum distance of:
    • 2 m (6 ft. 6 in.) from the street paving if there is neither a sidewalk nor a curb for vehicles or parts of vehicles up to 2 m (6 ft. 6 in.) tall and 3 m (9 ft. 10 in.) for vehicles or parts of vehicles over 2 m (6 ft. 6 in.) tall
    • 2.5 m (8 ft.) from the street paving if there is a sidewalk or a curb for vehicles or parts of vehicles up to 2 m (6 ft. 6 in.) tall and 3 m (9 ft. 10 in.) for vehicles or parts of vehicles over 2 m (6 ft. 6 in.) tall
    • 1 m (3 ft. 4 in.) from a bicycle path
OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE
  • A commercial vehicle or trailer stored or parked on a property must belong to the owner of the building or the tenant of a dwelling unit located on the property.
PROHIBITED VEHICLES

It is prohibited to store or park the following vehicles on a residential property:

  • Vehicles with more than six wheels and more than two axles
  • Vehicles or towing trailers 6.8 m (22 ft.) long or longer, with the exception of recreational vehicles and buses intended for school transit or adapted transit
  • Buses, with the exception of buses intended for school transit or adapted transit, which are authorized from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. only
  • Tool vehicles
  • Tow trucks
  • Tractors, with the exception of mini-tractors for maintaining lawns
  • Heavy machinery, including backhoes
