Garage sale

Garage sales are allowed during the last three weekends of the summer across the territory of Châteauguay.

Although no permit or registration is required, some rules must nevertheless be observed.

Next garage sales

Garage sales will be allowed on the Châteauguay territory on July 10-11 and September 11-12, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Given the sanitary measures then in force, the garage sales was cancelled in May 22-23. New dates have been added to the calendar : August 7-8.

It should be noted that Ville de Châteauguay will follow the recommendations of Public Health, given the pandemic. Garage sales could be cancelled as directed by the government.

Regulatory requirements 

AUTHORIZED HOURS

Sales are allowed between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on authorized days.

ACCEPTED LOCATIONS

Sales must be held within the boundaries of residential land, and not on streetsides.

ADVERTISING

Garage sale advertising displayed away from the place of sale is prohibited.

The individuals organizing a sale may post an announcement for their event on the city website in the Garage Sales – Information and Registration page. They simply have to give their address and provide a brief description of what treasure hunters will be able to find.

LIABILTY FOR SOLD PRODUCTS

When you hold a garage sale, you are legally liable for the products that you sell.  Therefore, make sure that the products are compliant and fulfil applicable safety standards. This is especially the case for children and baby products, such as safety barriers, car seats and beds, that set requirements to be observed including product lifetimes set by the manufacturer.

An administrative codification is a document that combines the original text of a by-law with all the amendments made since its adoption. It has no legal weight. It is rather a tool created solely to make it easier to read and understand the by-law as a whole. Only the original by-law and its amending by-laws have legal weight.
