Hot tubs and saunas

Hot tub

A number of standards apply to the installation of saunas and hot tubs. A permit may also be required for a hot tub, based on its water capacity.

Hot tub with a capacity of less than 2,000 litres (528 gallons) of water

No permit required, but installation standards are set out under the municipal by-law.

Hot tub with a capacity of over 2,000 litres (528 gallons)

Hot tubs this size are considered to be pools. The pool by-laws therefore apply and a permit is required.

Applicable standards

  • One hot tub or sauna per lot.
  • Side or back yard.
  • If possible, avoid placing a hot tub under electric wires or telephone/television cables. If this is impossible, ensure that the wires are over 5 m (16 ft. 3 in.) over the hot tub. Otherwise, the hot tub must be at least 1.5 m (5 ft.) away from the wires.
  • Hot tubs and saunas cannot be placed in a servitude, unless otherwise authorized. It is your responsibility to determine the servitudes on your property.

Property boundary lines

  • 1.5 m (5 ft.) (A)

Particular standards may apply to properties located:

  • In a flood zone or shoreline protection zone (for properties near waterways)
