Recreational vehicles – Storage and parking
A number of rules apply to the storage and parking of recreational vehicles, including:
- Inhabitable recreational vehicles
- Recreational watercraft
- All-terrain vehicles (ATVs)
- Snowmobiles
- Seadoos
Non-motorized sail or paddle boats, such as sailboards, surfboards, canoes, kayaks, rowboats and pedalos, are not subject to this by-law.
Applicable standards
- The parking or storage of recreational vehicles is authorized:
- From April 1 to November 15, in the front yard
- At any time in the back or side yard
- Three recreational vehicles are permitted per property, of which one may be parked in the front yard.
- The numbers of parking spaces used to park these vehicles in the front yard must not encroach on the number of parking spaces for automobiles; in other words, the parking spaces must not be used only for recreational vehicles.
- The storage or parking of a recreational vehicle is authorized in the front, side and back yard.
- In the front yard, the recreational vehicle must be parked in a paved space.
- With the exception of properties where the main building is located less than 6 m (19 ft. 6 in.) from the road right-of-way, in the front yard, the recreational vehicle, including the attachment device, must be at a minimum distance of:
- 2.5 m (8 ft.) from the street paving if there is a sidewalk or a curb for vehicles or parts of vehicles up to 2 m (6 ft. 6 in.) tall and 3 m (9 ft. 10 in.) for vehicles or parts of vehicles over 2 m (6 ft. 6 in.) tall
- 2 m (6 ft. 6 in.) from the street paving if there is neither a sidewalk nor a curb for vehicles or parts of vehicles up to 2 m (6 ft. 6 in.) tall and 3 m (9 ft. 10 in.) for vehicles or parts of vehicles over 2 m (6 ft. 6 in.) tall
- 1 m (3 ft. 4 in.) from a bicycle path
- 8 m (22 ft.) for a vehicle parked in the front yard
- 13 m (42 ft. 6 in.) for a vehicle parked in the back or side yard
- An opaque screen comprised of a hedge or fence at least 1.8 m (6 ft.) high is mandatory along the property boundary line adjacent to the length of the recreational vehicle.
- The stored or parked recreational vehicle must belong to the owner of the building or the tenant of a dwelling unit located on the property.
- No inhabitable recreational vehicle stored or parked on the property can at any time be used as a dwelling place or a shelter for animals.
It is prohibited to store or park the following vehicles on a residential property:
- Vehicles with more than six wheels and more than two axles
- Vehicles or towing trailers 6.8 m (22 ft.) long or longer, with the exception of recreational vehicles and buses intended for school transit or adapted transit
- Buses, with the exception of buses intended for school transit or adapted transit, which are authorized from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. only
- Tool vehicles
- Tow trucks
- Tractors, with the exception of mini-tractors for maintaining lawns
- Heavy machinery, including backhoes
