Road safety report: fall in road accidents in 2020

The Service de police de Châteauguay has recorded a fall in the number of road accidents in 2020 across the territory served by the Service de Police compared to 2019. The statistics show a 27% fall in the number of total accidents and 37% fall in accidents resulting in injuries.

The majority of accidents occurred on weekdays between 12:00 noon and 6.00 p.m. in areas with a 50 km/h speed limit. The main causes of accidents were:

  • Following too closely
  • Not respecting a mandatory stop sign/traffic lights
  • Loss of control
  • Failure to stop after an accident

490 accidents were recorded in 2020 compared to 668 in 2019. The statistics show that there were 101 accidents resulting in injuries in 2020 and 160 in 2019.

Other statistics recorded:

  • Accidents involving pedestrians:  5 in 2020 and 20 in 2019;
  • Accidents involving cyclists:  17 in 2020 and 9 in 2019.

The Service de police de Châteauguay asks car drivers to continue to adopt safe driving habits at all times.
