City Asks Residents to Reduce Their Drinking Water Consumption

Thursday, 21 May, 2020

Châteauguay, May 21, 2020 – At this time of the year when a lot of work is being done outside and there are strong peaks in water consumption, the Ville de Châteauguay asks residents to adopt the good habit of reducing their use of drinking water.

Watering lawns, washing cars and filling pools are some of the activities that increase drinking water consumption, especially when we have good weather on the weekends and in the next few days. The City reminds residents that they need to abide by municipal bylaws governing the use of drinking water at all times.

Filling of pools and cleaning outdoors

It is permitted to fill your pool between 8:00 pm and 6:00 am, except in the case of the installation of a new pool when it is possible to fill it during the day. The washing of driveways[BM1] , sidewalks, patios and outside walls of buildings is only allowed between April 1 and May 15. It is therefore currently prohibited unless necessary for painting or landscaping work.

Temporary lawn watering ban

To stabilize its distribution network, the City is prohibiting the watering of lawns effective immediately and until further notice. However, it will be permitted to water newly installed sod between 9:00 pm and midnight, for a maximum of 10 days. You must obtain a permit from the City for this purpose. It will be issued on request at no cost by the Division inspection et permis (450 698-3260).

Patrols will be conducted to make sure that everyone complies with the measures in place. Non-compliance may lead to fines ranging from $120 to $2,000 (article 6.1, Chapter VI, General Rules Bylaw G-2000).

Cities served by our drinking water system will also be informed of these measures. There are some simple tips and tricks for saving water on a daily basis. It is crucial to preserve our water and, to do so, we can make a few changes to avoid wasting this precious resource. Visit peep.reseau-environnement.com/economisez-leau/trucs-et-astuces for a host of suggestions on how to save water in our day-to-day lives.

To report any problem related to the drinking water supply, please contact the municipality on the B-CITI interactive platform at https://chateauguay.b-citi.com/.
