Trees: Planting, felling or cutting branches

A permit may be required to fell a tree, depending on the diameter of its trunk. Certain rules apply to tree planting and branch cutting.

(measured 1 metre (3 feet 4 inches) from the ground)

No permit is required to cut down these trees.
In all cases, before starting any work on a tree, make sure you really are the owner.

  • The felling of a tree will be authorized only if it is replaced by a new tree on the property. The replacement tree does not need to be planted in the same location as the felled tree.
  • In cases where the applicant is unable or unwilling to replace the tree, an amount of $650 will be required as compensation. This amount will be put into a Tree Planting Fund to plant trees in public spaces (parks, grounds and other).

12 months

Replacement of felled trees must be completed within 12 months of the permit being issued.
